A former governor of Ogun state, Gbenga Daniel, has warned the political class not to take the electorate for granted as the country gears up for general elections in 2023.

Daniel, who is the All Progressives Congress (APC) senator candidate for Ogun East, also emphasized the need for Nigeria to return to agriculture to enhance the country’s quest for food self-sufficiency.

This was expressed by the former governor during a courtesy visit to all the traditional rulers of the Socal Government Area of Ikenne, who met at the palace of Alaperu de Iperu, Oba Adeleke Idowu Basibo.

The event, which was part of Daniel’s ongoing neighborhood-by-neighborhood tour of the nine local government areas in Ogun’s East Senate District, preceded the empowerment and awarding of scholarships to indigent students at Ikenne LG.

He had previously toured various communities in local government including Ogere, Iperu, Irolu, Ilishan and Ikenne where he called for mass support for all APC candidates in the 2023 election.

The former governor, who stated that Nigerians are now becoming more and more politically aware, called on political leaders to always take the people with them to ensure inclusive government and popular participation.

He said that despite the lack of formidable opponents against him in the 2023 Senate race, he will not give up connecting with people to learn about their aspirations and get first-hand information about what they expect of him.

Speaking in the context of global food shortages, the former Governor said that Nigeria urgently needs to return to agriculture as a viable way to increase local food production and ensure a sustainable economy.

He explained that his interest in revitalizing agriculture and complementing the sector with the necessary infrastructure explains why the idea of an agricultural cargo airport was conceived during his tenure as governor some 15 years ago.

He added that his administration acquired the land for the Ikenne airport project, paid compensation to the owners of the affected land, and carried out the airport designs before leaving office.

“There is a global food shortage, there is hunger on earth. Nigeria needs to return to agriculture as an alternative means of generating income and foreign exchange and also increasing local food sufficiency.

“Our belief in agriculture is the same reason we started handing out farm tractors as part of our empowerment program. It’s telling people the next way to go is agriculture,” he said.

However, Daniel congratulated the incumbent governor, Dapo Abiodun, for continuing with the execution of the airport project, which, he said, was almost finished.

He noted that it was a great honor for him to be nominated to represent Ogun East in the National Assembly like many illustrious Indians of the state, including the late Senator Abraham Adesanya; Senator Biyi Durojaiye; Senator Jubril Martins-Kuye and Senator Adegbenga Kaka.

“We had done 31 districts in three local governments visited so far and in all these places, we have not yet seen a poster of any party for that senatorial space. We haven’t seen an opposition one and people keep saying, why are you still hanging around then?

“First, the biggest mistake you can make is taking your people for granted. And as you know, even my best friends, I never take them for granted. Representing Ogun East Senatorial District is a great honor, that was the position we have a lot of great people from this state in.”

“I think that is why it is very important that before you represent any town, you should go out, listen to them, even if they say 10 things, maybe you can take advantage of two or three of them. And I can assure you that our walk from room to room has been eye-opening,” she added.

A highlight of the ward-to-ward tour is the Gateway Front Foundation’s free health screening program, which served over 800 seniors and infants, as well as the empowerment raffle that also won a sedan of the Toyota brand, five motorcycles and a 2.5 kVA generator. as well as more than 500 other items, including sewing machines and grinding machines.
