Average gas prices in Kahului fell 10 cents from last week to $5.07 as of Thursday, according to AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch.
The rate is 21 cents lower than last month, but still 56 cents higher than a year ago.
Honolulu saw the lowest average prices in the state at $4.97 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline, which is eight cents lower than last week. Thread averaged $4.98, the same as last week.
Lihue’s highest state average of $5.42 was six cents lower than last week.
“The cheapest gas stations in the state today charge between $4 and $4.40 a gallon,” AAA Hawaii general manager Liane Sumida said in a press release on Thursday. “With all the price volatility of 2022, this year is by far the most expensive ever for gasoline prices. The 2022 annual average price for the state will likely be $5.14 per gallon, which is the second most expensive in the US after California’s expected annual average of $5.49 per gallon. The previous record year for gasoline prices in Hawaii was 2012, when the state average price for the year was $4.31.
Statewide, Hawaii is averaging $5.03 a gallon, which is seven cents lower than last week but still well above the national average price of $3.16.
