PREMIER LEAGUE: Manchester United and Arsenal now favorites to sign World Cup star in January

Date:

Manchester United and Arsenal are both in the market for a new striker to increase their attacking options ahead of the second half of the season.

He has battled for a consistent place in Diego Simeone’s starting XI this term, and has just four goals to his name in 18 appearances this term.

The World Cup in Qatar allowed Félix to display all of his qualities on the world stage, scoring once and providing two assists in four appearances for Portugal.

Those performances have reminded the rest of Europe of his unique qualities, and interest from Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and PSG in acquiring his services has now been credited.

According to Spanish outlet AS, United and Arsenal are leading the race to sign Felix. They claim those clubs are best placed to complete a loan move for the Portugal star.

Reports in the Daily Record allege that Atlético Madrid will allow a temporary exit if the interested clubs pay a loan fee of £8m and his full salary.

Atlético boss Diego Simeone has downplayed talk of Joao Félix’s departure in January, claiming he can still be very important to the team.

He explained (via 90min): “What matters to me is the team, and he is important to the team.

“If he does for us what we saw in the World Cup, it will be very important. He has the talent and the team needs his qualities.

“Since I’ve been at the club there are some differences between people and we can’t agree on everything. [But] I have looked for the best for the club until the last day, be it me or the footballers. Everyone gives their best.”

Joao Félix opened the scoring for Atlético in their 2-0 home win over Elche in La Liga on Thursday night.
