2023: Stakeholders commission journalists to implement the new electoral law

1 Some stakeholders in the southeast have called on journalists to ensure full implementation of the Amended Electoral Law before the 2023 General Elections through their reporting.

2 They made the call during the Annual Press Conference organized by the Chapel of Correspondents, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu Council of State.

New Electoral Law

4 The theme of the event was “2023: The New Electoral Law and the Media”.

5 Media professionals were also advised to report positively, fairly and avoid being biased in their reporting as the public grew to trust them.

6 Speaking on the subject, the guest speaker and senior lawyer from Nigeria, Prof. Ofornze AmucheaziHe said that journalists had a great role to play in updating the implementation of the new Electoral Law.
The main supporter said that the media should highlight the new provisions of the Act and inform Nigerians about its feasibility.

7 Amucheazi, represented by Mr. antonio onalaw professor at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, awkanumbered some of the sections to include section 5 which talked about the financing of INEC9, on electronic transmissions of electoral results.

8 He said that the media had a duty to inform the public how feasible and effective the INEC electoral results database was.

9 “They are expected to report on electoral arbitrator transparency and accountability, be neutral, and provide an equal platform for all candidates in the election.

10 “Journalists should play a more active role in advocacy, raising public awareness and working hard to improve their profession,” he said.

11 The don also urged them to uphold their professional ethics by reporting truthful, fair, and balanced stories.

12 Also speaking, Prof. Peter Umeadithe All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) A presidential candidate, he said that journalists should ask questions about certain events during the elections.

13 Umeadi, former senior judge of Anambra State, said: “Only when you report these developments can we have a better Nigeria, but if we let people go without asking questions, we are not doing the country any good.

14 “The media must not take the 2023 elections for granted, they must denounce all electoral fraud,” he warned.

15 Giving them the task of professionalism, the APGA-The candidate wondered why some journalists announced the election results even when the elections were underway, saying it was a shame for the profession and democracy.

16 Earlier in her opening speech, the President of the occasion, Prof. Edith Nwosuhe described the topic as appropriate, emphasizing that the core mandate of journalists was to report things as they saw them.

19 Sharing the same opinion, the National Coordinator, Southeast Movement for President 2023, Rev. Okechukwu OniohaHe said that the Electoral Law had empowered the people to elect their preferred candidates.

20 Obioha said the media owes a lot to the public by educating and letting people know about the new election act.

22 However, he warned that they should desist from what would spoil the 2023 elections and wait for confirmation before giving any news they were not sure about.
