Former Chelsea manager named Zambia manager

Date:

The former Chelsea and Ghana manager has agreed to take charge of the Zambia national team on a 2-year contract.

“I was looking for the right challenge and that’s why I chose Zambia,” Grant said.

“I came here for the challenge and I hope that when I leave I will look around and say that we did a good job and laid a good foundation for the future.

“I think Zambia has the potential, we have set targets for what we want to achieve.”

The Israeli coach was introduced as the new coach of the Zambian national team on Thursday, November 22 in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia.

The first task for Avram Grant’s Zambia would be to qualify for AFCON 2023 and then compete to win the tournament.

The 2012 winners would imagine themselves, with talents such as Leicester’s Patson Daka and Rangers’ Fashion Sakala leading the way.

His chances have certainly increased with the appointment of Avram Grant, who has a lot of experience in AFCON.

Grant was Ghana’s coach from 2014 to 2017, leading the Black Stars to the AFCON final in 2015, where they lost on penalties to the Ivorians.

He made it all the way to the semifinals in the next edition of the tournament in 2017. However, he lost to Cameroon in that round, before losing to Burkina Faso in a third-place playoff, leading to his relinquishing the position.

The 67-year-old would replace former Zambian international Moses Sichone, who had held an interim role since the departure of former coach Aljosa Asanovic in September.

They would look to Grant to turn around recent fortunes that have seen them miss out on AFCON and this year’s World Cup.
