About Afikpo Government Secondary School (GSSA)

Afikpo Government Secondary School (GSSA), located in Ebonyi State, was established in 1953 by the British colonial authority with Charles W. Low (Australian) as its first headmaster. The school was one of Nigeria’s pre-war “leadership academies” until the war and its aftermath, and to date has produced accomplished alumni/guys in various walks of life. Ing. David Nweze Umahi, the current Governor of Ebonyi State, is one of its many distinguished products.

About GSSA Alumni/Old Boys

For the last 10 plus years, GSSA Alumni/Old Boys from all over the world had decided to restore our beloved alma mater and make it great again. To achieve this goal, we have cumulatively raised and spent more than $100 million on a “Rebuild and Restore” agenda to revive dilapidated physical structures: main classroom blocks, exam room, library and laboratories, assembly hall, school hostels, sports pavilion, motorized. Water wells, nursing, state-of-the-art interactive video learning initiative, electronic library, motorized wells and water reticulation system, solar electricity, and book donation on relevant topics, among others.

Our annual conventions are usually held in different parts of the world, while the return to the alma mater is geared towards supporting efforts to recreate the rich history of an environment and facilities conducive to learning, as well as the high standards in academic pursuit. The events also provide an opportunity to motivate the current generation of staff and students to return to those hallmarks of quality public education in Nigeria, which we were all privileged to enjoy at Afikpo Government High School. In addition to recalling the rich history of dedicated teachers, good students, strong results and excellence in sports, we reviewed the progress of the restoration initiative and planned more projects in the spirit of giving back where the solid foundations for excelling in life lie, were posts.
