The European Statistical Contest (ESC) 2023 begins! High school students from 19 countries will compete, first at the national level and then at the European level, in the sixth edition of this statistical literacy contest.

Teamwork to solve statistical problems.

The ESC is a school competition in which teams of high school students compete against each other to solve statistical problems, search for data, and produce statistical analysis. The goal is to promote statistical literacy among students, while encouraging teachers to use new educational materials based on official statistics.

Since the competition reflects the different curricula across Europe, it is divided into two phases:

  1. The national phase, during which students compete against their peers in their own country using questions relevant to their studies; Y
  2. a European phase, where the finalists represent their countries at the European level and produce short videos on a statistical topic.

More than 17,000 students from 19 European countries participated last year

More than 17,000 students from 19 countries joined the fifth edition of the competition, which took place in the 2021-2022 school year. Using official statistics, the participants in the European finals had to present their findings on what the official statistics say about the environment in their country/region. The students produced some really powerful videos. The two winning teams were announced on June 3.

Slovakia joins the contest this year

The sixth edition of the ESC is already underway in 19 countries. 18 countries also participated in previous editions of the contest: Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain. 1 country is new to the competition: Slovakia.

Teachers and students from those 19 countries can start forming their teams and join the contest.

Also keep an eye out for the public election award taking place in many countries. You will be asked to help choose the best videos!
