PSG dominated proceedings in the first period boasting most of the possession.
The hosts thought they should have been awarded a penalty 17 minutes into the game after Hakimi was brought down in the area.
However, referee Michael Oliver rejected his appeal as he was deemed to have been offside in the build-up.
PSG continued to dominate but Galtier’s men did not create any clear chances until the 38th minute, when Benfica defender Antonio Silva was penalized for committing a foul in the area, before Juan Bernat and Michael Oliver were penalized by the locals.
Kylian Mbappe stepped up and placed his penalty past Benfica goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos to give the hosts a 1-0 lead, becoming PSG’s all-time top scorer in the Champions League with 31 goals.
Mbappe again came close to finding the back of the net in stoppage time, but his effort was easily handled by Vlachodimos as it proved to be the final action in the first 45 minutes with the hosts holding a slim lead at half-time.
The second half resumed with the hosts hoping to hold on to their lead this time and double their lead.
But lightning struck twice when the visitors were awarded a penalty after a VAR check in the 60th minute due to a reckless challenge from Marco Verratti.
Joao Mario stepped up and edged past Gianluigi Donnarumma to level things up at the Parc des Princes with just under 30 minutes to go.
PSG are desperately searching for the winning goal despite their command of the ball, and thought they found it in the 86th minute after Kylian Mbappé found the back of the net, but the Frenchman had his shot disallowed for offside.
In the end it ended at the Parc des Princes 1-1 and both teams had to share the spoils once again with Christophe Galtier’s side extending their winless streak to three matches in all competitions.
