Vincius Jr’s return to club football from Real Madrid was marred by the racist abuse he suffered during the club’s 2-0 win over Real Valladolid.
“LaLiga continues without doing anything”
The Brazilian striker then tweeted a complaint, singling out the Spanish league’s governing body for its lack of action against racists who taunted him during Madrid’s return to action.
He said that “racists keep going to the stadiums and seeing the biggest club in the world up close and @LaLiga keeps doing nothing…
“I will continue with my head held high and celebrating my victories and those of Madrid.
“In the end it is MY fault. 🤙🏿”
The only initial response from a LaLiga official was made by league president Javier Tebas, who responded to Vinicius asking him to get better information on LaLiga’s efforts against racism, which he says has been going on for years.
Official response from LaLiga through a press release
LaLiga has now responded to Vinicius in an official statement where he stated that they had already started to take action before Vinicius took the facts of the Real Madrid vs Real Valladolid match to social media.
They assure in their statement broadcast through Mundo Deportivo that the fan who made the jokes has been identified and the fact has been reported to the Anti-Violence Commission and the Hate Crimes Prosecutor’s Office.
“Given the publication of Vinicius Jr, a Real Madrid player, on his social networks, making a comment in which he alludes to the lack of action measures by LaLiga in the fight against racism, LaLiga has detected racist insults by from someone, from the stands of the Zorrilla stadium, published on social networks.
“These events will be reported to the Anti-Violence Commission and the Hate Crimes Prosecutor’s Office.”
The final outcome of the proceedings against the fan remains to be seen, but it would certainly be splendid if some of the people behind the racist taunts in major league soccer finally get more than a slap on the wrist.
