Man caught on camera ripping US flag from Santa Barbara

Date:

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -A Santa Barbara business owner wants police to locate the man who stole an American flag outside his business.

The robbery was caught on camera.

It happened last weekend outside the Santa Barbara Signs store at the top of State Street. His owner and team had moved into the old Cardigans site in the 3000 block just a few days earlier.

The employees received an alert from a security camera on Saturday night. The next day, they reviewed the video and saw footage of the man.

“Sure enough, a guy was walking by, he didn’t look homeless, definitely unhappy or under the influence of something as he proceeded to rip the American flag off our building,” said Nick Kvistad, senior designer for Santa Barbara Signs.

“And then, he ripped the flag off the pole, walked away and came back about 10 minutes later because he forgot his bike. Not that he hated the American flag, it was there, so he took it.”

At one point, the man can be seen wrapping the flag around his head as he leaves the frame.

“Our neighbors mention that there is a lot of activity here at night, so I hope that can be resolved and that the police investigate this,” Kvistad said.

Kvistad said the man also caused some damage to the area behind the business.

The owner filed a police report and hopes someone will recognize the man.
