Australian television networks Seven and Nine reported infringements in gambling advertisements

If it’s not Crown or The Star with a regulatory flaw, what (or who) could it be? This time, the country’s two largest television networks, Seven and Nine, were ordered to implement new systems after violating national regulations on gambling advertisements.

Seven allegedly aired 49 betting promotions during its coverage of the 2021 Olympics, an investigation by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has found.

In addition, a separate investigation found that Nine had aired a gambling advertisement at 8:21 p.m. during half-time of the National Rugby League Grand Final in October 2021.

Broadcasters may not broadcast advertisements for betting products or services during their live coverage of sporting events between 5am and 8:30pm

For longer-format events, such as the Olympics, broadcasters may not air a gambling advertisement from five minutes before the first event of the day begins until 8:30 p.m. and no later than 8:30 p.m. once every two hours.

ACMA President Nerida O’Loughlin said: “These rules exist to address community concerns about excessive exposure to gambling promotions. Both Seven and Nine are very aware that they have to keep these announcements at certain times.

“Many families enjoy watching sports as a shared activity, and parents are concerned that children exposed to these ads may normalize gambling as part of sport.”

As a result, Seven and Nine have entered into “court-enforceable commitments” with the ACMA. They are required to implement new systems “to avoid breaking the rules again.”
