If there is one thing for sure about us Indians, it is this: we are a nation of spoilers. We cannot bear to see others happy and will find ways to dampen the spirit of the recipient of joy. I just had the wonderful chhello the last show been selected as India’s entry for the Oscars when loud murmurs of disapproval tore through the air. jayLet’s celebrate a movie that has such a joyous tone.
In the case of Tamil actress Nayanthara and her husband, filmmaker Vignesh Shivan, their twin of joy born earlier this week has led the custodians of the Great Bharatiya Sabhyata to present himself in all his glory, demanding details of his surrogacy process, from the moment Vignesh hid his semen in a small bottle to the moment his twins were brought home.
The couple is being accused of skipping the normal procedure and breaking the queue to bring their twins home. I say, let them be. This is the couple’s happiest time together. Why do we spoil them by questioning their right to happiness? How does anyone care how they got their babies while they got there?
I have seen Karan Johar arrive there. His twins by surrogacy are the joy of his life, the reason for being. His smile is his reason for living. Reading them stories every night is any day preferable to storytelling. And partying with the twins is so much more fun than partying with the movie fraternity.
Karan’s conversations are about Ruhi-this and Yash-that. They are not being raised as star children, but as normal children who think that Karan’s mother is his mother and Karan is his father.
Despite the uniqueness of their birth, Karan makes sure that Ruhi and Yash have a normal childhood. Most important of all, Karan has ensured that the twins have friends and a life outside of the entertainment industry. Children born into film families often grow up thinking that the sun rises and sets in the backyard of Bollywood.
It is not the same for the star children of the South. The two sons of Mahesh Babu and Namrata Shirodkar, Gautam and Sitara, do everything that children their age are supposed to do. They were aware that they are born super privileged. But this privilege was never allowed to influence his view of the world. Every few months, Mahesh’s family vacations abroad where they are just like any family on vacation.
It is very important for child stars to spend quality time with their parents to get to know and appreciate the world outside of the film industry. Taimur, the superstar son of Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, is now beginning to understand why photographers have been after him since he was born. His father has been sitting Taimur down to slowly explain about the family Taimur was born into.
At some point, the twins of Nayanthara and Vignesh would have to be informed about the special circumstances that brought them into the world. But there is no rush. May the couple enjoy the blissful innocence of the toothless smile of two newborn babies… As long as the spoilers allow it.
And yes, Nayanthara and Vignesh should hook up with Karan Johar for some invaluable advice on raising surrogacy twins as normal children.
