PHOENIX – Sophomore Carsyn Gallegos scored all three goals for the Phoenix women’s soccer team, which was able to beat Mazama, 3-2, and snap a five-game losing streak to capture its first Skyline Conference win on Monday at Phoenix-Talent Rising Stadium.

“She played a great game and was a little bit unstoppable today,” Phoenix coach Stephanie Vandenbusch said of Gallegos. “She put on a show and she was the person we were trying to get the ball to and we got to look at her at the end.”

Gallegos scored in the 37th minute to give the Pirates (3-7, 1-4 Skyline) a 1-0 halftime lead.

The Vikings (2-5-1, 2-2-1) responded by tying the game 1-all three minutes into the second half, but in the 55th minute Gallegos put the Piratas ahead with a goal assisted by Anahí. Town. Gallegos completed his hat-trick in the 66th minute with a penalty kick that gave his team a 3-1 lead.

Mazama cut Phoenix’s lead to 3-2 in the 70th minute, but the Pirates’ backline, led by senior captain and center back Ruby Rector, was able to hold off the Vikings.

Replacing injured junior goaltender Jayden Vos, freshman Addison McConnell provided the Pirates with six saves.

CHRISTIAN WATERFALL 6, COQUILLE 4: At Coquille, Autumn Murray scored two goals as Cascade Christian used four second-half touchdowns to overcome a slow start and earn a District 4 win.

After Coquille broke the ice with a five-minute touchdown, senior Murray tied the game 1-1 with her 25th-minute goal. Three minutes later, Murray set up Ellie Vanlandingham’s score to put the Challengers (4 -6-1, 4-5-1 Dist. 4) ahead 2-1.

With the score tied at 2-2 in the second half, Bella Williams’ corner kick found the back of the net in the 50th minute, three minutes before Murray connected again to give the Challengers breathing space with a lead from 4-2.

The Challengers’ Aubrey Hess and Taylor Folin scored clean-up goals in the 63rd and 67th minutes, collecting deflected shot attempts by Emma Coats.

Defensively, freshman Mae Ferreira put in an outstanding defensive job as captain of the baseline.
