Rene Van der Gijp questions Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey’s Ajax scouting

Date:

Calvin Bassey has had a mixed start at Ajax with five straight clean sheets followed by a win in six matches.

The Dutch giants spent €23m on the 22-year-old centre-back this summer transfer window, bringing in the Nigerian international to replace Lisandro Martinez, who left for Manchester United.

Bassey has had a mixed start to life at Ajax, keeping five successive clean sheets in his first five games for the Dutch giants before conceding 17 goals in the following six games.

The Super Eagles international has been criticized by many for his role in matches, with Ajax winning just one match in their last six, all of which Bassey has featured.

The latest to criticize the Nigerian international is former PSV Eindhoven player Van der Gijp, who believes Ajax overpaid to sign Bassey from Rangers.

The 61-year-old retired footballer turned sports expert suggested the Dutch champions got a better deal when they signed 19-year-old defender Francisco Conceicao from FC Porto for just €5m.

Van der Gijp told voetbalprimeur as reported by the Daily Record: “If you spend €24m on Bassey, you must have seen him all year, right? 24 million euros, how high do you set the bar? They spend 5 million euros for Francisco Conceição, fine, but 24 million euros for Bassey. Nope.”

Bassey and Ajax hope to return to winning ways when they host Excelsior at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Sunday 16 October for their matchday 10 match of the Dutch Eredivisie.
