The countries of southern Europe urge to improve the control of migrants at the borders

Date:

Nicosia, October 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) The interior and immigration ministers of Italy, Spain, Greece, Malta and Cyprus called for greater surveillance of the external borders of the European Union (EU) to control irregular immigration.

In a statement issued on Saturday after the end of a two-day meeting in the western Cypriot city of Paphos, ministers from the so-called MED5 group, made up of the five Mediterranean and southern EU member states, drew particular attention to surveillance of the Green Line controlled by the United Nations in Cyprus, the Xinhua news agency reported.

The ministers called for a balanced approach in the negotiations to achieve a “truly common (European) asylum and migration management system” to achieve a migration policy aimed at a “holistic approach to the effective management of asylum and migration”.

In relation to the Green Line in Cyprus, the MED5 ministers called for adequate management “due to the specific circumstances that exist, despite the fact that the Green Line is not an external border of the EU”.

Cypriot Interior Minister Nicos Nouris, hosting the meeting, said asylum seekers make up 4 percent of the country’s population.
