The premature declaration of the presidential elections generates polarization, laments a politician

Date:

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Politician Fahri Hamzah said on Tuesday that the declaration of the 2024 presidential candidacy by Anies Baswedan and the NasDem party has stirred up the country’s political scene, as other political parties have started mumbling their own candidates for the election, whose registration phase will only officially open in 2023.

The Gelora Party politician lamented that the premature declaration well before the elections caused division and polarization in society.

“Right now, the presidential election declarations have caused an early split. Identity politics and polarization have re-emerged,” Fahri said in a statement on Oct. 11.

Fahri stated that October 19 to November 25, 2023 is the official period in which the presidential and vice-presidential candidates are announced. He believes that political parties should discuss substantive ideas and issues instead of focusing on fielding candidates.

“However, what is happening now is that the first presidential candidates are emerging. Most presidential candidates are short on ideas,” he said.

The former vice president of the House of Representatives (DPR) insists that presidential bid announcements will only appear superficial, devoid of meaningful political competition and riddled with irrelevance.
