Ruud Gullit criticizes Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder for Calvin Bassey and Daley Blind

Ruud Gullit suggested it’s time to bench Ajax captain Daley Blind

After recent defensive frailties, Schreuder has experimented with Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey in a left-back role and moved Ajax captain Daley Blind into the center of defence.

Bassey began his career as a left-back at Scottish giants Rangers before switching to centre-back and signing for Ajax to replace Lisandro Martinez, who was on his way to Manchester United.

However, Dutch legend Gullit has been adamantly critical of Bassey’s deployment to play left-back to accommodate Blind’s return to central defence.

As reported by Daily logGullit alleged that the recent move is an attempt to ensure that Ajax captain Blind continues to make the team.

Gullit said: “Sometimes it seems like he has to play (Blind). It seems like everything is being flipped to make him play. That’s how I see it.

“At one point I saw he was back in the center against Napoli, so Calvin Bassey suddenly had to play left-back.”

The former Chelsea defender suggested that Blind is very good with the ball at his feet, but not so good in fulfilling his defensive responsibilities.

“Blind is one of the best players on the ball, but defensively… It’s difficult for him at the moment. It seems like a place has to be created for him. It seems that way,” Gullit explained.

Ajax won their last Dutch Eredivisie match, defeating Excelsior 7-1 at the Johan Cruyff Arena with Bassey notching one (1) assist while Blind was substituted at half time for Owen Wijndal.
